Albert House B&B Whether you are a tourist passing through the historic town of Cradock, or on business needing quality overnight accommodation, Albert House B&B is the answer. Set in spacious gardens with plenty of shade provided by fruit and other trees, the establishment lies in a tranquil area, yet conveniently close to shops and historical sites. We have 6 en suite rooms, 5 with entrances from the garden. All rooms have DSTV and air conditioning. Secure off-road parking is available for all guests. We provide superb breakfasts, and dinners can be arranged on request. Guests who want to enjoy a meal al fresco are welcome to use the convenient barbeque facilities set beneath the canopy of a sprawling pear tree in the garden. The Albert Guest House is a quality B&B set in neat, sprawling gardens in a tranquil residential area in the town of Cradock, yet it is only a minute’s drive from the town centre and a popular shopping mall. The original Albert House building was completed in 1843, and one can appreciate the typical Victorian features and décor while still enjoying the convenience of all the modern facilities expected by our guests. We especially pride ourselves on our bedding, and our quality beds, mattresses and pillows are complemented by only the very best in authentic Percale linen. Uncompromising luxury for sleep aficionados! To make your stay really comfortable in the harsh Karoo winters, apart from air conditioning, electric blankets are also provided. We offer • Free Broadband Internet connection • Use of barbeque facilities (please supply your own wood!) • Secure parking is provided on the premises When Albert House was built in 1843 on its large 4000 square metre plot, a garden was laid out in typical Victorian fashion with lots of heritage roses and trees planted, some of them still flourishing to this day! The size of the Albert House trees tell a story of their own, and one of the most prominent is a wild olive planted the same year the house was built, making it over 160 years old! The two pear trees are over 120 years old, yet still produce fruit every year! A few hundred metres down the road from Albert House is the largest Ilex Oak in the Southern Hemisphere, which has often been mentioned in botanical literature. Besides creating welcome shade and enhancing the appearance of the garden, the productive fruit trees are harvested regularly and jams and preservatives are made in the very kitchen at Albert House. So remember, when you tuck into your scrumptious breakfast in the morning, those tasty jams come from the trees just outside the dining room window! The extensive gardens, lawns and trees tend to draw one outside the rooms, and we have noted how many guests enjoy sitting outside in this botanical splendour rather than in their rooms! Who are our typical guests? Most of our guests, 80% are South African businessmen and businesswomen and 20% tourists or leisure travellers, and notably tourists from up to eighteen different countries. This comes as no surprise as the Mountain Zebra National Park has always been a major attraction for foreign tourists, and is indeed one of the best managed National Parks in the country with almost guaranteed game sighting! For people on business trips we provide an efficient and comfortable service, this having been proved by the large contingent that consistently return to Albert House to enjoy the relaxing, yet businesslike facilities and atmosphere! Zetana Guesthouse Zetana Guesthouse is a beautiful bed and breakfast ideal for relaxation in a tranquil environment. It is situated in a quiet neighbourhood in Burgersdorp. Essentially a sheep-farming community, the little town is rich in character and well worth a visit. The guest house offer four luxurious en-suite rooms, all with flat screen TVs, bar fridges and snack trays. At Zetana, we strive for individual attention and satisfaction. Described as the oldest town in the North Eastern Cape, Burgersdorp lies south in the tip of an inverted triangle between Aliwal North and Venterstad. Many regard the beautiful town, surrounded by the Stormberg Mountains, as the cultural heart of the northern reaches of the province with no fewer than 10 national monuments; the museum alone is made up of four buildings and a visit is a must. Bed & Breakfast
Dwesa Nature Reserve Dwesa Nature Reserve is a little green gem along the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast. A provincial reserve, it offers coastal forest, grasslands with wild animals, and best of all, a chance to laze on a gloriously empty beach. During the mild winter, look out for humpback whales and the incredible Sardine Run, when sardines migrate in their millions up the east coast of South Africa, followed by predators such as sharks and birds. Caravan & Camping
Komdomo Campsite Baviaanskloof Game Reserve Baviaanskloof, with World Heritage Site status is one of South Africa's best kept travel secrets and Komdomo Campsite, situated on the banks of the Groot River, is the gateway into Baviaanskloof and an ideal position to camp or caravan in order to explore further. Views from the camp are spectacular, the rock formations have to be seen to be believed. The campsite has 22 large, informal sites and divided into 3 sections. There are 2 ablution blocks, one very old and one newer, both functional but, certainly when we were there, in need of some tlc! Had they been in better order I would certainly have given a higher rating. Being situated as it is in a deep river valley, there is not a great deal of sunshine (we were there late May, sun got to our site at 10am, by 3 we were in shadow) so, particularly in cooler months try to choose as open a site as possible. Stock up as well as possible with groceries, fresh produce, drinking water (we didn't drink from taps, I can't comment on water quality) as there is no place other then the village of Patensie (about 1/2 hours drive) to purchase. Be sure too, to pack food tightly, being in a nature area there are baboons. Close by is Kougar Dam, well worth a visit. Caravan & Camping
PSA Holiday Resort Gonubie and closely situated East London are amongst of South Africa’s unsung treasures on the Eastern Cape coast line. With its moderate climate and exceptional coastline, its golden sandy beaches, combined with its rich cultural history and abundant natural resources make it ideally suited to tourism. The resort is nestled in lush indigenous dune forest and situated at Quenera Mouth east (18km east of East London) of the Gonubie River and close to the beach. We are a coastal resort and are committed in bringing you ultimate relaxation and tranquility. Some of the best saltwater fishing can be enjoyed, combined with unpolluted and uncrowned safe swimming and a bird and nature lovers' paradise. If a relaxed venue is what you are looking for, with walks along the peaceful beaches - look no further! Your only disturbance will be the chirping of the numerous bird species. The resort still manages to retain some of its old fashioned values blended with a dollop of laidback charm. To ensure absolute peace of mind the resort is enclosed with an electrified security fence. The resort is evaluated annually by the AA for quality assurance and has a rating of Highly Recommended Resort with Varied Accommodation East London and Gonubie are all about long, white stretches of sandy beaches that appeal to surfers, swimmers, fisherman and sun worshippers alike. The beaches are some of the finest in the world and a few, like Nahoon Reef, are a surfer’s paradise and host to international surfing competitions. East London’s easy access to other areas such as the Wild Coast, and inland to the Amatola Mountains, also makes it a popular destination. Known as Buffalo City, East London lies on the Buffalo River, its people are refreshingly friendly and the weather generally pleasant throughout the year. South Africa's only river port city is set on the broad Buffalo River and one of the most attractive stretches of the Eastern Cape seaboard. This is a holiday destination for the whole family and, whilst the natural history museum - home to the only dodo egg in existence and an awesome exhibit of the Coelacanth, the 200,000 year old footprints of the homosapiens at the Bats Cave - is a rainy day opportunity not to be missed. Sand-boarding on Bonza Bay’s massive sand dunes, hiking trails and a visit to the Lion Park to see lion cubs are fine weather events. Add to this already fairly long list of things to do, the aquarium, Queens Park Zoo, whale and dolphin watching, a 18 hole golf course with its majestic ocean view, a paradise for fishermen and botanical gardens; toss in a heap of water sports, and you have a recipe for a really successful, sun-swept time away from it all. East London has a small but busy national airport and brings in 350 000 people a year to the city. Caravan & Camping

There are a number of aspects that make Koffylaagte interesting! The very rich history is one. Artefacts are still found dating back centuries, like pennies from 1917 and bicycle license plates to name only 2 of many. We have won the Lilizela Tourism award having been nominated 3 consecutive years for Best Wildlife Encounters. There is no otherplace on earth whereby horses graze with rhino while the domestic cat watches on a few centimetres from them intermingled with baby lambs and chickens and a porcupine that comes to eat the dogs food from inside the manager's homestead while the female ostrich comes to eat out of the owners plate while he enjoys his lunch outside. The fauna, flora and unique vegetation such as the Queen of the day, the shepherd's tree and plum tree as well as the largest, oldest endangered elephant foot tree provide for a botanical paradise! These are just a few of the aspects that make Koffylaagte the magical gem that it is! The most recent exciting news from the farm is the birth of our baby rhino calf as well as a cave that has been discovered for the very first time. Game Lodge

Chokka Trail The Chokka Trail is a 4 day/3 night hiking holiday in the greater St Francis area between Oyster Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis. The hiking holiday kicks off with hikers exploring the untouched coastline between Oyster Bay and Thysbaai, where the cape clawless otter often puts up a show in shallow waters, if you are not lucky enough to see small buck, you will find their spoor on the beach and the birdlife is prolific. The Oyster Bay Dune Bypass System, called the Sand River by locals, is a 16km sand of sea, to be conquered by hikers on day 2. The trail leads from Oyster Bay to Dune Ridge Nature Reserve on the outskirts of St Francis Bay, and could be the most challenging of the 4 days. The moving dune field sometimes opens century old middens, protecting pot shards, bones, teeth and huge shells for future generations to see. The wetlands become a hive of bird activity during the wet months, changing the scenery completely. The last two days covers the rest of the shoreline, with many highlights – the second largest blow hole in southern Africa, an unknown Khoi grave, shipwrecks, more middens, the tallest masonry lighthouse situated on the south eastern most point of Africa as well as a visit to the SANCCOB Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre. On day 4 hikers enjoy a tour of Port St Francis where they also do a calamari tasting and see a chokka cleaning demo, and hike to the famous St Francis Bay canals, from where a boat will take them through the most successful manmade canal system in South Africa to a restaurant for a farewell lunch. This is far more than a hike, it is an educational experience while enjoying the outdoors. It is untouched and unexplored beauty at its best. The trail is moderate and suitable for ages between 10 and 80. Hikers are out there enjoying the 62km trail while there luggage is transported, with a hot meal, warm shower and cold beer waiting at the end of each day. It is fully catered. Action & Adventure

Valley of Desolation Formed hundreds of millions of years ago, the Karoo of South Africa is one of the great natural wonders of the world. Camdeboo National Park provides the visitor with insights into the unique landscape and ecosystem of the Karoo, not to mention awesome scenic beauty. A unique feature of the 19 405-hectare park is its location, practically surrounding the town of Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape. The greater portion of the park is situated between 740 and 1480 metres above sea level on the foothills of the Sneeuberg range, while a small section of the low lying-plains is included. The Nqweba Dam lies within the park and covers about 1000 hectares when full. At some places, dolerites form jointed pillars – the best examples of which are found in the Valley of Desolation where erosion of the softer sedimentary beds has left dolerite pillars which rise to heights of 90 – 120 metres. Visitors to the game viewing area are requested to remain in their vehicles. Visitors are advised to vacate the area in the event of heavy rainfall, in order to avoid the risk of getting stuck or cut off by flash floods. Raggy Charters Raggy Charters is the only licensed boat-based whale watching company in Port Elizabeth, South Africa offering clients a personalised ocean experience where you’ll have the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, penguins and other seabirds in Algoa Bay. We are dedicated to providing an educational and personal experience with the marine life found in our bay, and we thrive to show are guests as much wildlife as possible during our cruises, whilst educating them on the marine environment and its vital need for conservation. Raggy Charters was established in 1997 in order to fund the Baywatch Marine Conservation Project, which is dedicated to marine conservation and research in Algoa Bay. During the cruise we take guests to St Croix Island, which is home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins in the world. These endangered birds have rapidly declined, as our population alone lost 70% of their numbers in 7 years. It is along this route that we have the best chance of finding all the other exciting marine creatures that frequent our bay. Between June and January we find the ‘gentle giants’ humpback and Southern right whales. Both species travel thousands of kilometres to use the safe and warm shores of Africa as their breeding grounds. Humpback whales are well known for their acrobatic breaches and they never fail to amaze here in Algoa Bay as we see thousands of them passing by. Southern right whales prefer the shallower waters and seem to really enjoy getting close up and personal with our guests as they lazily roll and dive around the boat. We are lucky to boast some of the best bottlenose dolphin sightings in the world as 30,000 individuals use our bay every year, and their numbers are only increasing as we constantly see babies amongst the often 400-strong pods. We are now the Bottlenose Dolphin Capital of the World and have a 100% success rate in sightings since the beginning of 2016. Between February and June each year we get to witness the incredible sardine run which creates feeding frenzies with thousands of common dolphins launching through the waves trying to herd the fish in to a ball, with Cape gannets, and other seabirds, dive-bombing the shoal. Penguins, seals, sharks and game fish help themselves to the feast and then bryde’s & minke whales wait until the end to finish the school off, as they lunge through the water, mouth open wide, engulfing anything in their path. Our bay is also home to 250,000 Cape gannets breeding on Bird Island, and 6000 Cape fur seals at Black Rocks. We see humpback dolphins mostly in the summer months, and it is during this time the surface is covered with the tiny fins of baby hammerhead sharks. During the winter months, apart from the migratory whales, we also find albatrosses, petrels, terns and other pelagic bird species! There really is something for everyone in Algoa Bay!
