Tembe Elephant Park & Lodge Nestled in the Tembe Elephant Park, a Big Five reserve set in a lush sand forest savannah and swamp ecosystem in northern Maputaland that is home to some of the largest big tuskers in Africa and over 250 of the largest elephants in the world, Tembe Elephant Lodge represents a community conservation success story like no other. Tembe’s success is built on a three-way partnership between Ezemvelo-KZN Wildlife, who manage the park and animals and the Tembe tribe who still own this pristine piece of their ancestral land as well as owning and managing the Lodge in conjunction with their private partners. Tranquil, sustainable and located in the heart of the sand forest, Tembe Elephant Lodge is testimony to the care and pride the Tembe people take in a project that has done much to uplift their community and continues to do more. Tembe Safaris has grown to become the biggest private sector employer in the region and is the largest contributor to the local economy. The lodge currently employs 45 people, all from the KwaTembe region who are provided with professional training in hospitality or as guides. Staff remuneration sees over R3.5 million flow into what was formerly one of the most impoverished areas in South Africa, while community levies collected at the Park gate brings in R300 000 annually for community assistance and funding for community projects. In addition, Tembe supports college bursaries valued at over R1 million for students from the community and provides financial and consultative assistance to other lodges in the KwaTembe region to assist with their conversion from self-catering options to fully catered and serviced accommodation, which offers far greater opportunity for community employment. Community conservation education in the form of free game drives valued at over R150 000 annually, ensures that the Tembe people understand and treasure ‘their’ reserve and the role it plays in conservation in the region and value the contribution it makes to the community’s well-being – in stark contrast to the often strained relationships between proclaimed conservation areas and neighbouring communities. The Lodge itself offers a luxury tented experience that is an affordable take on high-end safari lodges, this makes it attractive for local tourists while still appealing to the international visitor – a factor which accounts for its consistently high occupancy rates. The warmth and friendliness of the Lodge staff under the legendary Tom Mahambe are cited as a major factor in the high incidence of repeat visits (as a visit to the Lodge’s TripAdvisor page or a cursory glance at the Guest Book in reception will show). The Lodge has recently undergone major upgrades to the public dining and reception areas using natural, sustainably-sourced materials under magnificent soaring thatch. The tents, each located for maximum privacy and seclusion invite guests in with comfy camping chairs on private stoeps, high quality linen and attractive use of natural materials throughout. Each has its own outdoor shower and "massage/spa" tent alongside which offers serenity and privacy. Everything has been done to minimise impact on the environment and blend in beautifully with the bush. Tembe Elephant Lodge is a wonderful local product which excels in the sustainable tourism category and is a successful example of how community involvement can benefit both conservation initiatives and economic upliftment in South Africa. Itchyfeet SA A previous Provincial Lilizela Tourism Award winner. We are still at it, providing authentic experiences when it comes to white water paddling, climbing and Drakensberg hiking. In other words, RIVER, ROCK, and MOUNTAIN. The white water paddling would be kayaking and rafting. We started off only on the Tugela River, now it is the Bushmans River, Umkomaas River and Ash River. Climbing? Nothing artificial about it. You choose the route you want scale. You are in charge of the belay and you use nothing but real rubber on your feet, real chalk on those fingertips and all the proper hardware. All on real rock! And then of course the biggy, the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg. The hiking outings we offer is literally anywhere in the Drakensberg, whenever you want as well as how long you want. From half an hour in the Little Berg to the two-week long High Drakensberg Grand Traverse. And don't forget the very picturesque Cathedral Peak abseil, pretty cool! Apart from all the experiences provided Itchyfeet SA is also an African Paddling Association accredited river guide training provider. We're not finished. We've already mentioned that we are all about RIVER, ROCK and MOUNTAIN, right? Watch this space, BUSH will be added at the end of 2017. Talana Museum Nestled at the base of Talana Hill the museum is set in a 60 acre heritage park. The Zulu name "Talana" meaning "the shelf where precious items are stored" is a most appropriate name for this large and varied museum. The museum comprises 42 buildings, with exhibits dedicated to subjects as diverse as war and agriculture, mining, industry and domestic life in 23 of these and new permanent exhibits will open later this year.. We are situated just outside the town of Dundee, Kwa Zulu Natal - South Africa, and are within short driving distances of some of the most famous battlefields in the country; Blood River, Rorkes Drift, Fugitives Drift, Isandlwana, Elandslaagte, Spioenkop, Colenso and the Siege of Ladysmith. Open 7 days a week, 363 days a year, the museum takes about 1/2 a day for a quick visit. Named after the hill at the base of which the museum is situated, "Talana" meaning "the shelf where precious items are stored" is a most appropriate name for this large and varied museum. Started in 1979 to commemorate the Anglo Zulu war, the small collection moved to the present site at the beginning of 1983. A 20 acre section of "Dundee" farm, bought in 1982, for the development of a museum to commemorate the centenary of Dundee, included the home and farmsteading of one of the founders of the town, the site of the first coal mining activity in this area and portion of the Talana battlefield. The Smith cottage provides an evocative picture of the lives of the hardy pioneer farmers. A founder of Dundee, Peter Smith, farmed and mined coal on this site. His restored home and farm buildings house cultural, agricultural and transport displays. The displays of weapons, uniforms, photographs and artifacts dramatically depict the conflict between the Zulu, Boer and Brit, as well as an insight into the Bushmen, the earliest settlers of the region. Glass has been manufactured in this valley since the end of the 19th century. Although the factory no longer exists, the museum is home to a magnificent collection of glass from around the world and South Africa. A superb collection of beadwork depicting the cultures of the many different African groups and the use of beads in all Indian and western cultures in South Africa, may be viewed in the Bead Gallery. Dundee became the heart of the richest coal producing area in the country. Nicknamed "Coalopolis" the town expanded rapidly and the reconstructed town square and some of the shops, vividly recalls these times. The first organised coal mining in South Africa was begun by the Dundee Coal Company (registered on the London Stock exchange in 1889), on the slopes of Talana Hill. The remains of coal mines that created the rich and vibrant economy of the area still mark the hillsides and valleys. Today the museum has four extensive coal exhibits depicting the many aspects of coal mining in this area and preserving the proud and unique heritage of our mining history. The Talana station complex comprises the reconstructed Talana station. A Class 13A locomotive and the Shosholoza carriage. Shosholoza can be hired for small functions. Talana Museum boasts a comprehensive range of archival material relating to the town, region, coal mining and military conflicts in this area over the past two centuries. Researchers have access to these records. The Museum Shop offers a variety of quality, locally produced products to suit every requirement. An extensive selection of books relating to the military history of the region, locally made beadwork and baskets and a wide variety of other crafts , are among many items available. A superb bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, sculpted in India and donated to the museum by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi, commemorates his involvement in this area in the early 20th C. This memorial, adjacent to a pond, in the parklike grounds of the museum, offers a place of quiet contemplation and reflection of a great man and his contribution to humanity. The 1913 Passive Resistance movement exhibit, takes a further and deeper look into the life of Gandhi and the start of his passive resistance movement. On 11 November 1913, in Dundee, he was tried for the first time in a court in South Africa and was sentenced to 90 days imprisonment or a fine of 60 pounds. He chose imprisonment. The Great War exhibit opened on 4 August 2014 commemorates the involvement of Dundee men in the war and puts the South African involvement into context. The permanent exhibit on Orange Grove Dairy, a local business founded in 1927, is a "proudly Dundee" tale. Kwakunje Cultural Village portrays the traditional lifestyle of a Zulu family and shows how culture changes over time, but also those elements of the culture that have adapted or remained unchanged. The Miners' Rest restaurant serves delicious meals, in a pre-1914 corrugated iron, miners home, that was relocated from Ballengeich mine, in our district. Although quaint and characterful it has a wide spread reputation for service and quality of meals. Catering for individuals, groups or functions are handled with flair and friendliness.
