Visitor Experience of the Year

AfriCanyon

Africanyon is an Adventure Tourism business located in The Crags, Plettenberg Bay with the intent to provide high-quality adventure! AfriCanyon was borne from a true passion for the outdoors. We have created an adventure activity, namely canyoning (called Kloofing in South Africa and Gorge Walking elsewhere). AfriCanyon's canyoning trips are about celebrating our natural heritage, heightening awareness and an appreciation for the environment through which we move, in a location that would otherwise remain hidden and inaccessible. Ramp it up or take the easier route, Clients are guided through this hidden gem, indigenous terrain packed with fun. All levels of adventurer welcome, complete novice to the more experienced. Abseil in and around waterfalls, optional jumps and our unique rock-pool zip-line make for the perfect outdoor adventure combination. With AfriCanyon you can!

Bloukrans Bungy - Face Adrenalin

Our purpose: to give people the most amazing experience of their lives. We’re having a great time, we love facing our fears and overcoming them, and we love helping other people do the same. • We run the world’s highest natural bungy jump - on Africa's highest bridge - and we offer walking tours of the bridge, too. • We keep everyone safe, treat everyone with respect, help everyone have fun. • The Bloukrans Bridge is 216 meters high. • We secure you in a full-body harness combined with ankle connection to ensure your safety. • We use pendulum bungy technology (the cord is secured to the opposite side of the bridge from the launch platform) so that you’ll enjoy the smoothest, most comfortable bungy on the planet. When the cord pulls you out of your free-fall, you’ll immediately segue into a huge pendulum swing as you rebound towards the bridge. Our safety record is100% accident-free. By the end of December 2015, 292,831 people had bungeed Bloukrans (we opened the bridge for bungy in 1997, although we introduced commercial bungy jumping to South Africa in 1990.) We have had a number of world records associated with Bloukrans. In 2003, Bloukrans bungy was recognized as the world’s highest commercial bungy jump. In 2008 we were part of two more world records. Veronica Dean performed 19 bungy jumps in one hour and Bill Boshoff performed 101 jumps in a 24 hour period. Bill’s world record was subsequently surpassed, in 2011 we facilitated Scott Huntley to regain the world record with 107 jumps in the 24 hour period. We have played host to the likes of Prince Harry, Jack Osbourne, Thabo Mbeki, The Zuma family, Bobby Skinstad, Hansie Cronje, Fanie De Villiers, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, The Amazing Race, and many more famous and not so famous visitors - you never know who you could meet on any given day at Bloukrans, the world’s highest bungy bridge ! We have also been contracted by ITV’s “I’m a celebrity get me out of here”, The USA production of “The Amazing Race” and have featured in a number of local and international advertising productions. We have always supported the principles of the triple bottom line (financial, social, and environmental accountability) Bloukrans Bungy acknowledges the rights of workers, upholds South Africa’s labor laws, and encourages local entrepreneurs to share in our success through the establishment of businesses of their own (catering, curios and gift sales, etc.) at our Bloukrans campus - which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Bloukrans Bungy pays 10% of turnover the to the Tsitsikamma Village Trust, which was established to improve the lives of members of our local community. GPS co, 33 degrees 59`55

Long Tom Toboggan @ Misty Mountain

Enjoy the ride of your life and ‘excite your soul’ on Misty Mountain’s Long Tom Toboggan. Feel the wind in your hair and the thrill in your belly when you wind and whoosh around Mpumalanga’s Long Tom Pass mountains on the Long Tom Toboggan, the longest toboggan run in Africa with an impressive 1.7 kilometre track. Simply hop on board your cart and take a deep breath when you reach a speed of 45 kilometres an hour during your three-minute ride. Opened in March 2016, the Long Tom Toboggan is built on the principles of a European model, known as an ‘alpine coaster’ or ‘sommerrodelbahn’. Developed, built, owned and brought to life by the owners of Misty Mountain, James and Lisa Sheard, and their engineer friend Murray Simpson, the steel monorail track took over two years to complete. Building the Long Tom Toboggan took years of planning. Misty Mountain is set on a breath-taking 280-hectare South African Natural Heritage Site and the mountain down which the track meanders had never before been developed. This meant careful and minimal clearing of the land to make way for the development without compromising the environment or scenery. It took much experimentation and innovation but today this greenfields project stands as a proud testament to how the Lowveld’s many wonders can be opened up for the enjoyment of tourists and locals, while preserving the natural environment and scenic beauty of the area. Painstaking hours went into running safety tests on the 328 lengths of steel pipe, which led to the final product. The distance from the top to the bottom is equal to the length of 17 rugby fields and every centimetre of it has been checked, double checked and checked again to ensure riders’ safety. After your ride, relax and unwind at Misty Mountain Lodge. Perched 1700 metres above sea level, enjoy a meal on the deck with breath-taking views or book in and stay the night in this beautiful part of the world!

Untouched Adventures

Discover Untouched Adventures at the awesome Storms River Mouth along South Africa’s Garden Route in Tsitsikamma. The most popular adventure activity is a 2-3 hour Kayak & Lilo trip up the Storms River, where guests can experience paddling up the pristine river, under the famous Storms River Suspension Bridge, into a bats cave and through narrow gorge openings. To explore deeper into the gorge, the kayaks are left behind and everyone jumps onto their own inflatable red Lilo - where they “lie-low” as they gently wade along the black water of Storms River as gorge walls tower over you. On returning, the brave and adventurous can take the opportunity to leap off the overhanging cliff walls of the gorge into the deep pools below, or simply relax floating along enjoying the views. Taking families with children as young as 5, this trip caters for everyone seeking a unique and memorable experience in the Tsitsikamma. Even if you are keen to just laze on the beach, go snorkeling, try out scuba diving or dust off your scuba license for a scuba dive - Untouched Adventures has you covered for fun and adventure in Tsitsikamma National Park. Enjoy the abundance of marine life in the Protected Area that is home to the colourful reefs where you can spot the lazy guitar fish, or follow the inquisitive Red Roman on your Snorkel adventure. Our friendly Dive Master can take you to discover the secret underwater world in Tsitsikamma on an easy and relaxing dive. The shore entries are a max depth of 12m, and you will see lots of colourful soft corals, sea anemone's, nudibranch's as well as a variety of fish species from Red Romans to Blacktails, Stingrays and Sandsharks, and for the lucky divers, Tsitsikamma’s shy raggies. If you’re not scuba qualified but keen for a taste of the underwater world, you can do a half day Discover Scuba Course with Untouched Adventures which includes one ocean dive!
