Chanel du Plessis specialises in Tourism Research and Economics at Urban-Econ Development Economists (Pty) Ltd. She is currently involved in developing the Gauteng Tourism Sector Business Case and Strategy Review for the Gauteng Department of Economic Development. She championed the North West Provincial Tourism Sector Strategy, and worked on other high level tourism projects; namely the Eastern Cape Tourism Statistical Framework, City of Tshwane Tourism Sector Development Plan, the Tshwane East Capital Investment Opportunities Development and Capricorn District Municipality Tourism Master Plan and Branding. She completed her BCom Honours Tourism Management Degree with her Thesis focusing on Special Events as a Competitiveness Indicator for South Africa. Her research method focuses on strategic and environment analysis, and feasibility studies on the holistic tourism value-chain; along with conducting impact and investment opportunities assessments within the hospitality, events and rural community-based tourism. On a more personal level, she has extensive travel experience locally and internationally, traveling to countries like the USA, UK, Greece, Spain, UAE and Thailand. The exposure to the diverse cultures, tourism products, new developments and views in these industry gave her great respect for South Africa’s tourism and its possibilities. During her free-time she embark on an initiative she like to call “Be International,” by travelling to and in tourism node, like Maboneng, as an international tourist would, experiencing all the good and bad our country as a tourism destination has to offer. Chanel is passionate about tourism and believes that the continue development and pushing of boundaries in this sector will see South Africa achieve its “top 20 tourist destination by 2020” goal.
