Calling on suitable judges for the 2014 Lilizela Tourism Awards

South African Tourism is looking for passionate, respected tourism members to help adjudicate in the various categories

THE 2014 LILIZELA TOURISM AWARDS seek enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced tourism professionals to serve as adjudicators.

The Lilizela Tourism Awards programme, now in its second year, is led by the National Department of Tourism (NDT) and managed and delivered by the South African Tourism.

The inaugural awards were announced by the South African Minister of Tourism, Mr. Marthinus van Schalkwyk last year. These premier travel and tourism awards recognise and celebrate tourism businesses for excellence, for their contribution to South Africa’s global competitiveness, and for growing tourism’s contribution to GDP and job creation.

“Last year we received almost 1 300 entries for the Lilizela Tourism Awards across all the provinces. This number shows that tourism business owners seek recognition and reward for offering excellent products and service. It also shows that the industry recognises that a reward for excellence enhances the profile of businesses, and adds to the competitive edge of establishments,” says Mr Thulani Nzima, Chief Executive Officer of South African Tourism.

“Fueled by this insight, and with more categories added to this year’s competition, we would like to secure a panel of judges that will adjudicate in various categories. This will improve the credibility of the awards and promote peer review.

“We specifically seek industry players who are passionate about making a meaningful contribution to not only the awards, but also to the larger industry,” says Nzima.

The number of categories in the Lilizela Tourism Awards has grown. Each category has specialist requirements. In the interests of fairness, each entry must be exhaustively reviewed on its own merits, and in relation to other entries in its category. This is time-consuming work, demanding dedication and commitment to the process. People interested and available to judge the awards are invited to submit their profiles and a short motivation letter. The motivation letter should clearly indicate which of the categories applicant adjudicators are best suited to judge.

Eligible applicants are South Africans with experience in the tourism sector. However, entrants will not be permitted to judge awards that they themselves (or their establishments) have entered. Those who are selected as 2014 Lilizela judges will receive no financial compensation. However, their travel costs and accommodation will be covered in full by South African Tourism, where necessary.

Applications for judges from the industry are being invited in the following three focus areas of the 2014 Lilizela Tourism Awards:

  1. 1.    Service Excellence

This Focus Area has three Categories, and how well tourism products do this area, will be based on guest feedback and judges’ scores. Measurements have been put in place to allow the public to cast their vote.
